Egeniusz Geppert Oil paintings, drawings, watercolours by one of the best Polish painters of the 20th century on show at the National Museum in Wrocław The earliest work included in the exhibition is the Portrait of the Artist’s Father, a drawing made in 1912 when Geppert was still a freshman at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków where he studied under Jacek Malczewski. The Large King, painted over 60 years later, was one of his last pieces. Geppert’s early works already feature the motifs that would later become his trademark: horses, horsemen, and landscapes with meadows and forests. The artist’s two extended stays in Paris (1925-1927 and 1957) exerted a marked
influence upon his oeuvre. The first trip let him study Renaissance painting in
the Louvre and get firsthand experience of the French Impressionists. Three
decades later, his second Paris
sojourn resulted in a more spontaneous and free style revealing the influence
of Raoul Dufy. more...

Works by Michael Willmann (the Silesian Rembrandt) – not displayed on everyday basis – will provide a key attraction of the exhibition. Altogether about 150 exhibits dating between 1530 and 1800 will be presented. The visitors will enjoy an opportunity to enjoy works by, for example, Franz Anton Sebastini and Willmann’s grandson Georg Wilhelm Neunhertz as well as 10 pictures by Willmann himself with the famous Crucifixion group.
Collection of Silesian paintings dating between 16th and 18th century includes 418 items of which more than 50 are displayed in permanently. The exhibition will provide visitors with the occasion to gain insight into the museum’s collection and admire works usually kept unseen. These are not works of minor artistic value – says the exhibition curator Marek Pierzchała – we will present, for instance, precious baroque portraits, which failed to find their place in the permanent exhibition, limited by the available space. Visitors will also be given an
opportunity to see works permanently presented as the National
Museum’s deposit in Wrocław,
Brzeg, Legnica
and Świdnica with a renowned painting by Willmann – Crucifixion. Usually exhibited in Brzeg, it is perceived as one of the
most famous works by the Silesian Rembrandt and marked by a modern style of
painting which for some indicates approaching Rococo, for others – the dawn of
Impressionism. The exhibits are presented chronologically, except for
historical portraits’ galleries displayed in passageways. more...
