Lower Silesia has a well developed network of railways - there are many connections between the cities/towns and the trains run frequently. The passengers are serviced by PKP – Polish State Railways, which offers two classes of travel and four types of trains: local, fast, express and intercity.

The local and the fast are the cheapest ones and there is no need to make any reservations for them. However, when you decide to go by express or intercity, reservations are required (you have to buy so called “miejscówka”). Note that express and intercity run rather on longer distances, so when you plan the travel around Lower Silesia region, you will go by local or fast train. Traveling with intercity or express you can buy a weekend ticket. It entitles to unrestricted number of travels from 6 p.m. of the day preceding bank holiday until 12 p.m. of the last day of bank holiday. You pay 99 zł within second class and 149 zł within first class.

Deciding on intercity connection, it is good to ask about special promotions, as sometimes there is an opportunity to buy tickets much cheaper than usual.

Although the train stations in Poland are not the most pleasant places to stay in, they usually offer left-luggage offices, restaurants, bars, foreign exchange offices and telephone booths.

It is also worth to know that Wrocław has a good railway connection with Prague and Berlin – you can get there within a few hours. Within the city limits there are 10 railway stations.

And remember, if you get on the train without a ticket, go straight to the ticket inspector in the first carriage to buy one (5.50 zł extra). The fare-dodgers are heavily fined.
