Road rules

Driving license issued by EU member states are recognized in Poland.

  • Right side traffic.
  • Highest speed: 50 km/h (5am-11pm) and 60 km/hour (11pm - 5am) in towns, 90 km/h outside urban areas, 110 km/h on single carriageways and 120 km/h on dual carriageways, 130 km/h on motorways.
  • Day lights must be used all day, all year.
  • Permissible alcohol content in blood is 0.2 promille.
  • Seatbelts must be worn by both front seat and back seat passengers, with children up to the age of 12 and up to 150 cm tall using special certified seats.
  • It is not allowed to use hand-held mobiles while driving. A loud-speaking phone system is permitted.
  • Cars must be equipped with fire extinguisher, first-aid kit and hazard-warning reflexive triangle.

Watch out:

  • Some roads are in rather bad condition. There are a lot of unguarded railway crossings.
  • Buses moving from a bus stop have the right of way.
  • Trams have the right of way at equivalent intersections.
  • In big cities there are numerous roundabouts, the traffic is often coordinated by the police.
  • Polish fines range from 50-500 PLN.
